Welcome to the Eli Johnson Memorial Tournament

A BIG THANK YOU to all participating in the 4th Annual Eli Johnson Memorial Tournament at the Cullen Hockey Center. Eli was a Moorhead Youth Hockey alum who died by suicide in 2017. At the time of his death, Eli was a student athlete and a member of the Concordia College baseball team. Our hope is that Eli is remembered for how he lived, not how he died.

The Eli Johnson Memorial Tournament is brought to you by the Moorhead Youth Hockey Association and M3. By way of background, M3 is the mental health initiative of the Moorhead Youth Hockey Association. Research shows that kids begin to feel things like anxiety, lack of self-confidence and doubt as early as eight (8) years old. M3 recognizes that we have to connect with kids sooner by bringing them tools that help them understand what they may be feeling or what their friends may be feeling with age-appropriate curriculum. M3 has three goals: (1) Raise Awareness surrounding mental health, (2) Eliminate the Stigma associated with mental health, and (3) Connect Resources for addressing mental health. The Eli Johnson Memorial Tournament serves to honor Eli Johnson and continue to open the conversation around mental health.

As with mental wellness, there are no teams. Our friends and mental wellness champions around Minnesota and North Dakota are joining our efforts for this tournament to continue to raise awareness around mental health. The Max Foundation, 463 Foundation and Sophie’s Squad are all contributing to this meaningful tournament. Make no mistake, we are all in this together and we welcome everyone to join in this initiative.

Team Eli Athletes From Last Year

Tournament Events:

We have an incredible Tournament planned with added events that will truly make the Tournament meaningful for all the players and coaches.

All Eli Team

As part of the tournament, an “All Eli Team” will be selected. One player from each team will be selected by their coaches/team to represent the characteristics Eli embodied. Below are the characteristics that we encourage coaches to use in determining their team representative:

  • Competitive. A fiercely competitive person who never backed down from a challenge. Life is a game meant to be played, on and off the turf, field or rink. Eli wasn’t always on the top team as a youth player, he was small in stature, but he did not let that stop his intensity and willingness to compete.

  • Outgoing Personality. Eli coined the saying “Come One, Come All.” This speaks to his inclusive attitude towards all. When Eli won the Inspiration Award no one was surprised. He inspired many with his infectious personality.

  • Leader. Eli was a multi-sport athlete, a team captain, an MVP and a record holder. Teammates and friends looked up to Eli.

  • Superior Teammate. Eli’s tremendous athletic accolades were matched by his love of teammates and coaches, who he considered family. Eli had the rare ability to make others around him better on and off the field/ice.

Once the kids are selected from each team, we will send out an invite to the Cullen Hockey Center Great Room for a group photo, and to collect their swag and certificate for this honor.

Open Conversations About Mental Health

This tournament will be an opportunity to start and continue conversations about mental health. Mental health experts will be sprinkled throughout the rink to share and promote tools and resources regarding mental health. A suicide prevention booth will also be set-up at the rink. As parents and leaders in our communities, we cannot wait for the “perfect” time to talk about mental health. The conversation is the first step! We will have the rink full of age appropriate resources regarding mental health, focus, emotions and teamwork.

Rink Location

Unless otherwise indicated all Tournament Games are at the Cullen Hockey Center in MOORHEAD, MN.

707 SE Main Ave, Moorhead, MN

The CHC rinks are Bushy, Scheels, and Sanford.

MYHA Tournament Lodging-All MYHA tournaments are Stay-to-Play

The tournament committee has worked with the Fargo-Moorhead CVB to contract great rates and reserve hotel room blocks for our visiting teams.

In order to keep registration fees low, we will require all traveling teams to reserve rooms via the FMCVB Housing Bureau.

All room reservations must be made through the FMCVB Online Housing System – tournament rates will not be available for reservations made directly with the hotels and those reservations will not count toward the team’s commitment.

Team Managers/Coordinators: See the link below for instructions for setting up your team's room block. Please also make sure you read and understand the terms of the hotel contract at which you are staying, such as cancellation notices. MYHA is not responsible for hotel contracts as you must abide by the hotel's terms and conditions.  Please pass this information to your team so there are no surprises.
