Hockey Day Minnesota Important Items To Keep In Mind

Get Ready for Hockey Day Minnesota at MYHA!!

On Saturday, February 12, MYHA will host the 5th Annual Hockey Day Minnesota. After the high school state hockey tournament, this is probably the biggest youth hockey event in the State. It is a fantastic event that will showcase Moorhead hockey with a large number of games, at all age levels, on our new outdoor and the two indoor rinks. Depending on the weather, we expect up to 5,000 spectators for the games based on previous Hockey Day experiences. We will welcome many teams from out of town who will play on our rinks – and many spectators who will visit to be part of true Minnesota hockey.

The events will start at 7:30 am. For the first time, there will be two varsity games (Wayzata vs Roseau @ 10 am and Moorhead vs Hill Murray @ 1:30 pm). Fox Sport North will broadcast live from our rink all day to their 2 million households in the region, including coverage from the afternoon Gopher and Wild games in the Cities. Those two games will, of course, feature MYHA alumni John Lee and Matt Cullen, respectively. The FSN team is very excited about the event at MYHA – expect a lot of cameras to roam around the facility. On Friday night, the Moorhead Spuds will host a team dinner for the four varsity teams and VIP guests, as well as a skills competition.

We are very excited to be the host site for Hockey Day – as we beat out some stiff competition to host the event. The Hockey Day Committee and many volunteers have already put in countless hours to plan the event and get the outdoor rink ready. You will see more changes over the next weeks as we get ready for game day. You will see banners at many locations in the FM area and at our sister organizations in the region. There will also be more press coverage as we get closer to February 12; we want to make sure to have a strong crowd at the games.

Thanks to the many sponsors and donors, we were able to finish the outdoor rink and make plans for a very exciting schedule, including food and merchandise vendors onsite. Make sure you support our sponsors as they have made significant contributions to MYHA.

Important items for all of us to keep in mind:

  • Weather.
Unless the temperature is too high and affects the ice or there is a raging blizzard, expect the varsity games to be played on the outdoor rink. Dress appropriately.
  • Parking.
There will be no spectator parking at the MYHA arena (except handicapped parking). We are arranging for drop-off lanes, satellite parking and shuttle service. We will publish the details closer to Hockey Day. Make sure you plan additional time to get to the rink!
  • Volunteers.
One more extremely important item. Hockey Day Minnesota will showcase MYHA to the entire region. Therefore, we need all MYHA families to get involved in volunteering for Hockey Day. While there is some need for additional help before the event, we will need to come up with a massive volunteer effort starting on Friday afternoon through the last event on Saturday evening. We will need volunteers of all ages and experiences to help with items such as traffic control, program and ticket sales, facility maintenance, etc. Please let Joyce at the main office know when you can volunteer, or check the worker board posted in the lobby to sign up. Thank you!!!!

If you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know. We can be reached at 218-233-5021.

Welcome to the Home of Hockey Day Minnesota 2011

Moorhead Youth Hockey, in conjunction with FOX Sports North, the Minnesota Wild and Minnesota Hockey is proud to be the host site for the Fifth Annual Hockey Day Minnesota on Saturday, February 12, 2011.  FOX Sports North will broadcast live from Moorhead Youth Hockey's new outdoor arena.  A full day of hockey programming is planned including the following match-ups:  Roseau vs. Wayzata,  Moorhead vs. Hill Murray, Minnesota Gophers vs. Denver Pioneers, and Minnesota Wild vs. St. Louis Blues.

Minnesota Hockey President of Hockey, Dave Margenau said “Moorhead is an ideal location to celebrate the community spirit of Minnesoata Hockey. Moorhead Youth Hockey is well respected and will represent all that makes hockey in Minnesota so special.”

“I remember spending a lot of winter days on the outdoor rinks with my brothers and buddies,” said Ottawa Senators forward Matt Cullen, a Moorhead High School alumnus. “We had a rink in the backyard that my dad built. We hung lights from the gutters so we could play at night with all our buddies. I still remember the silver bucket that was our Stanley Cup. We'd play all day and well into the night until mom called us in for hot chocolate.  Some of my best hockey memories were made right on that rink. “

Fox Sports North“Growing up in Moorhead, the only thing that I dreamed about was playing for the Spuds,” said Ottawa Senators defenseman Brian Lee, a product of the Moorhead Youth Hockey system. “When I finally got to high school and was lucky enough to pull that Moorhead jersey over my head and wear the 'M' logo across my chest, I remember being so proud and wanting to do everything I could to continue the tradition that is Moorhead hockey. I still remember playing for the Spuds like it was yesterday and it is still some of the most fun I've ever had playing hockey.”

“Hockey Day Minnesota has quickly become a date that the residents of the State of Hockey mark on their calendars,” Wild Chief Operating Officer Matt Majka said. “The Wild is pleased to partner with Wells Fargo, FOX Sports North, Minnesota Hockey and the city of Moorhead on this tremendous day.”

FOX Sports North High School Games

Moorhead will host two high school games on February 12, 2011, Hockey Day Minnesota. The first match-up features Wayzata vs. Roseau and the second will feature Moorhead vs. Hill Murray.  Both games will be played on the new outdoor ice sheet at the Moorhead Youth Hockey Arena complex.
